Chris Nunn Signs Deal with Rangers after Viral Video Blows Up

Remember the movie The Rookie starring Dennis Quaid made in the early 2000’s? This story isn’t exactly the same but there are parts that are very similar. A pitcher with a great amount of potential who never quite got it right; a last ditch effort to realize a life-long dream; and a triumph that no one saw coming. Chris Nunn signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers just one day after his mother underwent her first chemotherapy session for breast cancer. And he achieved all of this from a video that was posted on the internet.

Although this is a crazy story, it is not entirely impossible to see it coming. Nunn was a 24th round pick of the Padres in 2012 out of Lipscomb University. He was a moderate success throughout his first 3 years in the system and was even getting looks from the Padres in ’14 but never quite made the jump. The next year was not as kind to Nunn as hip problems plagued him and resulted in a 7.03 ERA over 47 games. The Padres didn’t see enough promise from Nunn and ultimately cut him at the end of the season. Disappointed, Nunn returned to Nashville to further his education.

Nunn continued to work out with his pitching coach in case a call from a club came at some point. And a call did come in 2017 when the Brewers gave him a chance from the recommendation from his old Minor League coach Pat Murphy. The deal was not up to his standards though when he found out they wouldn’t offer him anything before than a Class A assignment. The stop for Nunn came when the Chicago Cubs plucked him off of an Independent League roster and assigned him to Double A. Next up was a stop in the Houston Astros farm system where he had a stop on their Double A system for a while.

Nunn has been bouncing around the Minor and Independent leagues for a few years now so thoughts of doubt had now began. Was he ever going to make it to the Majors? Was he good enough? Should he just go get a degree and focus on his future career? These are questions that almost any athlete has to ask themselves in their career. Not all of us are blessed with Major League talent like Nunn so he kept going and kept looking for a another way in. That route stunningly came through something called the PitchingNinja and the Flatgtound app.

These apps showed clubs that he was still there and ready to help them immediately. In a day and age where society that social media and the internet do so much harm, here is an example of where it can do a lot of good.

As a result of visiting a physical therapist and improving the muscles surrounding his ailing hip, Nunn was no sporting a blistering fastball hovering around 97-99 MPH. The video from the app blew up and it soon racked up somewhere around a million views and spurred newfound interest from MLB clubs. The Texas Rangers sent scouts down to watch Nunn and soon enough he was back in the MLB.

This is a story of perseverance if I’ve ever seen one. How Minor League players can bounce around from place to place and soon get lost in the system and out of the league just like that. It’s also an example of some of the good that the internet can do for an individual that just needs one more shot.

David Quinn Inspiring New York Rangers in First Season as Head Coach

After the New York Rangers were demolished 5-0 on the road in the last game of the regular season against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Rangers decided to fire Alain Vigneault as the head coach of the team. Under Vigneault, they made it to a Stanley Cup Final and they also had deep playoff runs, but New York had nothing to show for it.

The Rangers finished in last place in the Metropolitan Division last season. During the offseason, they decided to hire David Quinn as the new head coach. He coached at Boston University. The Dallas Stars and the Philadelphia Flyers are the other two teams in the league right now that have coaches that have coached at the NCAA level.

Quinn has brought an energetic attitude to a young New York Rangers team. They are in the middle of a rebuild and the Rangers hope one day they will be serious Stanley Cup contenders again. New York is going through growing pains this season despite their 13-10-2 record with 28 points. They currently sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division.

The New York Rangers have scored 75 goals so far this season and they have given up 76 goals. New York started the season with a 4-7-1 record. They have been a lot better lately and they look more structured and faster.

Their roster has an average age of 26.4. Filip Chytil is only 19 years old. He was a first-round pick last season and so was Lias Andersson. Chytil has scored five goals and has recorded four assists so far this season. His plus/minus rating is even. Andersson has scored one goal and one assist so far this season. He has only played in 11 games so far this season.

Chris Kreider leads the team in points with 21 (13 goals and 8 assists). His plus/minus rating is seven.

Mike Zibanejad has scored eight goals and recorded 13 assists. His plus/minus rating is -6. Neal Pionk and Brett Howden have each scored four goals so far this season. Pionk has 11 assists and Howden has nine assists. Pionk’s plus/minus rating is -4. Howden’s plus/minus rating is -1. Kevin Hayes has scored five goals and recorded 12 assists. His plus/minus rating is 6.

The youth movement has been pretty good under Dan Quinn, but they still don’t have that player that can take over a game.

At some point, they will hit a wall because of how young they are, and they are not ready to contend yet. I predicted before the season that this team would finish in seventh in the Metropolitan Division. They don’t have enough to contend with the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Pittsburgh Penguins, or the Washington Capitals. The Carolina Hurricanes, the Philadelphia Flyers, and the New Jersey Devils all have a better roster than the Rangers do. The only team that doesn’t is the New York Islanders and they will also fall at some point.

Speaking of falling, goaltender Henrik Lundqvist numbers have dipped over the past couple of years, but he has been better this season. His record is 9-7 with a .921 save percentage and a 2.60 GAA. Alexander Georgiev is the backup goaltender for the Rangers. His record is 4-3 with a .903 save percentage and a 3.12 GAA, along with one shutout.

Goaltender Igor Shestyorkin could be in the New York Rangers system very soon and it could help David Quinn’s cause since Lundqvist is 36 years old and he has only two years left on his contract.

Right winger Vitali Kravtsov, defenseman K’Andre Miller, and defenseman Nils Lundkvist were all drafted in the first-round in 2018 and they could make an impact sooner rather than later.

David Quinn has this team heading in the right direction. If they make it to the playoffs this season, the New York Rangers will have nothing to lose. In a couple of years from now, they will have Stanley Cup or bust expectations once again.

The Red Sox may be in on Adrian Beltre reunion

Rumors of Adrian Beltre returning to Boston have been floating around for years. Beltre came to Boston on a one year prove it deal in 2010 and did just that. He hit .321 with a league leading 49 doubles, 28 dingers, 102 runs driven in, and a .919 OPS during his time in Boston. That season has left the fans wanting more, and they might finally get it.

Last night, Rafael Devers pulled up running the bases with a hamstring injury and has been placed on the disabled list for the second time this month. With the deadline fast approaching we would hope Dombrowski would not go into the thick of a playoff race with a Tzu-Wei Lin/Eduardo Nunez timeshare at third, moving Brock Holt to a full time spot at second. Beltre is certainly on the trade block, and was a healthy scratch from todays lineup meaning a deal may be already in the works. Beltre has a full no trade clause meaning he can reject any team he desires. It would seem unlikely that he would say no to playing for a Boston fanbase that adores him and for a Red Sox team with the best record in baseball.

The biggest rumor swirling around is Beltre to Atlanta, but Ken Rosenthal says otherwise:

Hopefully the Red Sox somehow get this done, even if it does cost Michael Chavis who is a steroid using bum. In his age 39 season Beltre has a .292 AVG, 5 HRs, 33 RBIs and a .747 OPS after missing time early in the season with a hamstring injury. He has a higher batting average and OPS than Devers and is about 50 times the defender with five Gold Gloves and two Platinum Gloves. Beltre could serve as a useful mentor especially on the defensive side of the ball. Here’s how the lineup could shake out come playoff time:

  1. CF Mookie Betts
  2. LF Andrew Benintendi
  3. RF J.D. Martinez
  4. 1B Mitch Moreland
  5. SS Xander Bogaerts
  6. 3B Adrian Beltre
  7. DH Rafael Devers
  8. 2B Eduardo Nunez/Brandon Philips!?!
  9. C Christian Vasquez/Sandy Leon

I’m keeping Bradley on the bench if we could add Beltre and using Steve Pierce to get some spot starts and clutch hits. Bradley will be well over his July hot streak and back to his offensive deficiency. This lineup would be a lot stronger than what we are currently rolling out there. Also side note: Blake Swihart is playing third base as we speak this team needs an upgrade and soon.

Second side note: Beltre is great for baseball and could use a bigger audience:
